Flip Book Animation
Flip books are the very base of animation. When you break an animation down, they are all flipbooks. Even movies are a style of flipbooks. Fair warning, flipbooks can be long, tedious endeavors, but like all animations, the end result is the best part. You will need to keep focused while doing this project. It is not exactly small and you do not have all semester to do it. a mear 2 weeks.
Below are a few examples of Flipbooks that we will see in class and talk about as time goes by.
Assignment 1 – Flip Book
- Description:
o Students will create a 100 frame flip book by hand.
§ There should be at least 1 character in your story
§ There must be a background in all frames (unless the story calls for it and it’s approved by the teacher)
- Requirements – Students might have to provide their own index cards to complete this assignment. Everything else will be provided
- Tips/Hints – Bonus points for coloring your flipbook. However, don’t focus on colouring if you don’t have time to get it done.
Vocabulary
Flip Book Animation –
o The most traditional type of animation. Consist of single still images
hand drawn, put into a book form and flipped to create the illusion of
motion.
- FPS –
o Frames Per Second – Standard is 24, sometimes 30.
- Frame –
o A still image that when used with other still images with small
changes will make a moving animation. This concept is used in
Animation, TV and film. It is not used in Video gaming
- Light Table –
o A table that has a light in it or under it. The top is typically glass or
some other opaque surface to allow light to come through so the
animator can see where their last frame was
